What is a Safety Data Sheet?

Whether you're a manufacturer or supplier, you've probably heard of something called a safety data sheet or commonly referred to as an SDS (or MSDS). SDS' are internationally standardized documents that list out safety and health information for specific chemical substances or products. These sheets can include information ranging from specific chemical compounds and their concentrations or occupational safety and health instructions.

As a manufacturer, you might often receive an SDS from your supplier as a way of providing you with chemical data on the substances you've purchased from them. Being able to take that SDS and use it to further chemical transparency and hazard awareness within your organization can be a game-changer. Luckily, here at Toxnot we have recently debuted our own Safety Data Sheet Screener.

What is a Safety Data Sheet Screener?

Our SDS Screener is available at no cost and can help you better understand the data in your SDS in seconds. All you have to do is visit Toxnot’s SDS Screener website, upload the SDS file you'd like to screen, and with the click of a button you are instantly provided with detailed compliance and hazard material.

When you import an SDS for screening, you will be provided with three main categories of information: Compliance Screening, NGO Spotlight information, and Health Hazard Data.

  1. Compliance Screening
Your SDS will be screened against the most referenced compliance lists such as CA Prop 65, REACH, RoHS, and Conflict Minerals.

  2. NGO Spotlight
Your SDS will be reviewed to identify whether you have substance that are on NGO watchlists like ChemSec SIN List, LBC Priority Watch List, and the Cradle to Cradle Banned List

  3. Health Hazard Data
The screener will tell you what health hazards are flagged on your SDS and how hazardous they may be from low to high. Health hazards that may appear range from carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, endocrine activity, and many others.

If you'd like to gain invaluable information from your SDS in just seconds, test it out for yourself by visiting the Toxnot website here.
